The next morning, Sonic and Blaze met up with Tails in the Sol Emerald chamber. The emeralds were back in full strength, their energy pulsating, and sending a massive charge of energy to the center of the wallmounted shrine.

"It's almost ready," Tails said, "The portal should be opening soon."

Blaze looked up at the Sol Emeralds with a depressed expression. Her responsibility was about to tear her away from the person she loved more than anyone else.

Sonic, however, was unfased the whole time. Blaze couldn't figure out why he was so calm about the issue. He loved her as equally as she loved him, but she was the only one facing any kind of parting depression. She knew that as long as the portal was intact, and Sonic was in posession of the Chaos Emeralds, he could visit her whenever he wanted, but she also knew that Sonic's occupation as a hero would keep him bound to his world. She just couldn't figure out why he was so calm.

Soon, the portal lens had appeared, and the room went white as the portal fully expanded. Tails ecstatically approached the portal, looking through to his workshop that he had been denied the use of for days now.

"We did it, Sonic!" he said, "Come on, let's go home!"

Sonic, however, was hesitant to do so. He walked towards the portal, but stopped abruptly in front of Tails, and turned to face him. "Tails, you go."

Tails' eyes widened. "Wait, what?"

Sonic placed his hand on Tails' shoulder. "Listen bro, I know we're great friends and all, but I wanna stay here now."

Tails and Blaze both gaped in amazement at Sonic's statement. No one spoke for a brief moment, but Tails had eventually broken the silence. "But...this isn't our place to stay in! Back through that portal is our home!"

Sonic motioned Blaze over to him. "I'm sure Blaze wouldn't mind me staying here. Would you, honey?" he said as he wrapped his arm around her waist.

"Not at all," Blaze began, amazed at Sonic's audacity, "But you're needed back home, aren't you? A hero's work is never done, remember?"

"You said it yourself." Tails added on.

Sonic sighed. "I'm not the only hero back home," he said, placing his hand back on Tails' shoulder, "There's Knuckles, there's Shadow, there's Silver, there's even you! You guys'll manage just fine! Besides, if you ever need me again, you can just turn the portal on and call me back!"

Tails hung his head. "I know, but...I've always idolized you, Sonic. You never gave up on me, but now it feels like you're leaving me behind."

"Don't think of it like that, kiddo," Sonic said, "Think of it as me sending you out into the world. You've always devoted yourself to helping me, and now you need to start doing things for yourself. You're a strong young man, Tails. It's time for you to break free, and become your own person."

"Sonic," Blaze started, "You don't need to give up the life you have back home because of me. You can always come through the portal and visit me, remember?"

Sonic shifted over to Blaze, and embraced her tightly. "That's not gonna be good enough for me, Blaze. I love you, and I want to be as close to you as I can be. Coming through a portal now and then isn't gonna cut it for me."

Blaze was blushing profusely, and the guards in the room, for fear of reprimendation, remained silent as their lips pressed against each other's.

Tails understood exactly what was happening, and chuckled. "You actually did make it with Blaze. I had no idea you'd actually pull it off."

"You got it kid," Sonic said enthusiastically as he walked back over to Tails, "And there are plenty of girls back home waiting for you to come back."

"One of them is waiting for you, you know" Tails said, obviously mentioning Amy.

Sonic chuckled. "Yeah, and this will be good for her. You think you can deliver the news for me, bud?"

Tails rolled his eyes. "Yeah, but keep in mind that the next time we meet, I'm gonna dent your head just as badly as Amy will mine."

Sonic just laughed at the thought of Tails punching him that hard. "I doubt we'll have that problem."

Tails raised an eyebrow at this. "You think she'll move on?"

"I think she already has."

Tails was confused, but smiled figuring that Sonic must be telling the truth. "Don't worry, I'll come back some day, and we'll have a huge party!"

With that, Tails hopped through the portal, waving goodbye as he shut the device off. The portal lens disintigrated, the energy spreading across the emeralds once more.

"I'd say that you're irresponsible, and that you should have gone back home," Blaze said, approaching him with what he could tell was mock-malicious intent as she embraced him again, "But I'm happy you're staying."

An affectionate smile broke across Sonic's face. "I could never leave you behind," he said, "I love you too much for that."

Holding Sonic tightly, Blaze smiled. "I love you too, Sonic."

With that, they departed from the Sol Emerald chamber, off to face the world together. Things had worked out for them after all...
